Surf/Skate by Steve Miller
Always at the vanguard of scientific and artistic innovation, artist Steve Miller has integrated biomedical imaging technology, from MRIs to CT scans, to capture the natural and material world as extraordinary photographic images. The resulting works in the series, Health of the Planet, formed the basis of Steve Miller’s inventive fine art photography book Radiographic: X-Ray Photo Inventions. Surf/Skate, a companion piece to Radiographic, documents the expansion of his original concept, exploring the various ways in which Miller’s images are infiltrating the pop culture world as surf- and skateboard designs.
Making and breaking waves on Miller’s boards, Amazonian creatures from iguanas to piranhas make their way back into their lost habitats in style. As global environmental degradation continues to threaten the rainforests, Miller metaphorically restores the dwindling flora and fauna of the Amazon through dynamic surfaces and vehicles. With appearances by skater Tohmi Shiroyama, among others, Surf/Skate invites readers to take a ride to the intersection of fine art and sports culture in a bid to set life in dynamic motion.
